Large scale outdoor exhibition

The curatorial panel selects medium to large outdoor works by 20 sculptors to be displayed along a trail throughout the Gardens.

Concept Gallery Display

The indoor gallery display of concept drawings submitted by the selected artists –a popular feature of previous exhibitions – will again enrich the visitors’ experiences.

Indoor Sculpture Exhibition

Complementing the outdoor exhibition will be a display of smaller works by sculptors who exhibited in both the 2015-16 exhibition and the artists selected for this exhibition.  Medal Art New Zealand will also exhibit, along with the Royal Jewellery Studio collective. And there will be works by selected members of the New Zealand Society of Glass Artists as well as tied trout fly brooches by Craig McGregor.

Awards

Two awards will be presented during the exhibition:

  • Supreme Award – will be given to the sculptor deemed by the curatorial panel as producing the most outstanding outdoor sculpture. This award will be announced at the formal opening.
  • People’s Choice Award – will be given to the sculptor whose outdoor sculpture is voted the most popular by visitors. This will be announced at the public closing celebration.

Friends Acquisition

The Friends of Auckland Botanic Gardens will purchase an outdoor sculpture to remain in the Gardens and join the existing quality collection of outdoor work at the Gardens. This selection will be announced at the opening of the exhibition.

Community Activities

A programme of activities will be available for visitors to the exhibition including guided tours, workshops and a kids’ trail as well as music on Sundays. Pick up a brochure during the exhibition to find out what’s on or come back closer to the opening of the exhibition to view programme online.
