Jamie Pickernell’s work can best be described as eclectic. He draws no distinction between craft and fine art, or functional and non-functional objects. He takes inspiration from the materials, ingenuity, culture, history, flora and fauna of Aotearoa, injecting these elements into his pieces, which range from sculpture and furniture to architectural hardware and sign housing.
In 1989, Pickernell spent two years studying towards his Craft Design Maori Certificate at what was then known as Waiariki Polytechnic in Rotorua. He then pursued a Fine Arts Degree majoring in sculpture in 1994 at Whanganui Polytechnic. For the past 19 years he has worked as a full-time artist, creating commissioned pieces and exhibiting at outdoor sculpture shows.
