John Edgar is a self-taught artist, known for his sculpting mastery. He takes natural stone and fashions it into elegant abstract compositions. In pursuit of the understanding of ancient techniques of stone carving, throughout his career Edgar has travelled to China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, India, USA and Europe. Working with stone, he naturally forms a strong connection to the environment in his work, and he takes immense time in carefully selecting individual pieces. Edgar’s expeditions take him across New Zealand and to Scotland and India in search of the best stones. His technical mastery and sophistication of the medium renders his work blemish-free, completely seamless and without any marks or suggestion of fault.
Edgar, born 1950, is an Auckland-based artist. His work has been featured in shows since 1979, including many curated and touring exhibitions.
