Amalgamating traditional and contemporary craft techniques, Auckland-based Wanda Gillespie redresses art historical notions of the artefact. In her sculpture practice, she finely carves wood, suggesting tools or ideas of transformation, spirituality and religion. The mystical world is paramount to her practice. Her works are often abstract organic forms, or else they reinvent ordinary and practical objects and thereby take on a new life and meaning of their own.
Since graduating in 2009 with a Master of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Gillespie has exhibited regularly throughout New Zealand and Australia.
