James Kirkwood graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 1986. He is best know for his painting, frequently showing his work is solo or joint exhibitions.
Kirkwood has twice been a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards and won the Team McMillan BMW Art Award in 2005.
As well as paintings that incorporate aspects of landscape design and gardens, Kirkwood is also working a sculptor, where he is able to “step out of the frame”.
For this exhibition Kirkwood also draws upon the skills of Isobel Them and Kim Meek for the decorative aspects of his sculpture.
Kirkwood lives and works in Nelson.
This is the Kirkwood’s second time exhibiting in Sculpture in the Gardens.
