Tanya Ashken was born in England and studied both silver smithing in London and sculpture in London and Paris. She moved to New Zealand in 1963 with her husband John Drawbridge.
Ashken doesn’t draw her ideas before starting, instead she prefers to carve directly in wood or marble. Her carved work is made by using her sub-concious, and the built-up sculpture uses the little grey cells. If creating a cast work she will build up an armature with wire, wood, plaster of Paris or steel. Her sculptures are cast in bronze and aluminium.
Ashken has exhibited widely and has many public works throughout New Zealand, as well silver and sculpture works in Australia, The United States, Britain and China.
Ashken lives and works in Wellington.
This is Ashken’s second time exhibiting in Sculpture in the Gardens.
