Jack Taylor’s First Dance is a kinetic sculpture shaped by air, balance and intimacy. Inspired by the falling motion of a sycamore seed, the work represents their spinning, drifting descent into a slow, continuous dance. The wind sets the sculpture in motion with its two forms circling, separating, and reuniting, which resembles seeds carried through space and figures engaged in a delicate dance. The motion is fluid and responsive, emphasising a sense of shared rhythm.
The sculpture is balanced to move with minimal resistance, allowing minute shifts in the breeze to produce deviations in its path. The two forms appear to follow and respond to one another, sometimes drawing close, sometimes drifting apart. Its near constant movement draws the gaze while its chaotic counter intuitive motion resists becoming a predictable pattern, encouraging prolonged observation.
