Riki Waugh

Riki Waugh is an Auckland-based sculptor with more than 25 years experience working with steel and other metals. His practice combines traditional metalworking techniques with contemporary sculptural design, often using Corten steel, stainless steel and copper. Where possible, he incorporates reclaimed and upcycled materials, giving discarded metal new purpose through sculpture. Drawing inspiration from Aotearoa New Zealand’s natural environment, native wildlife and organic forms, he creates bold, highly-crafted works with a strong emphasis on form, texture and material. Riki’s sculptures often embrace weathering and natural patinas, allowing the materials to evolve and develop character over time.

Riki Waugh’s work Te Maru explores shelter, protection and connection through the form of an umbrella. Crafted from Corten and stainless steel, the work transforms an everyday object into a permanent sculptural form. The weathering Corten surface will continue to develop and change over time, contrasting with the stainless-steel ribs beneath the canopy. Designed at an oversized human scale, Te Maru invites visitors to stand beneath it and experience the work as both sculpture and shelter.
