James Wright

James Wright believes the strongest sculpture says more by doing less. His contemporary work pares back form to reveal character, emotion and movement, often blurring the line between abstraction and representation. Working predominantly in Corten steel, he creates sculptures that feel timeless, grounded in the landscape, yet open to interpretation. Influenced by a life of making, the natural world, and cultures he encounters through travel, James approaches every commission as a unique conversation between place, material and imagination.

Pond, James Pond is a playful work – a larger than life James Bond character as a duck on a mission to discover why his fellow mallards love living at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.

The name’s Pond, James Pond. I’m under cover to discover why the ducks are loving their life at the Auckland Botanic Gardens – what makes it so good? While disguised as a gardener I’ve been watching and already the evidence is stacking up – amazing gardens well-maintained; water; a safe haven; great staff; even the food is pretty good. The colours, the fragrances, the wildlife, the people – it’s a treasure. Our own slice of paradise.

And if James Pond decides to hang up his bow tie, there could be another assignment waiting for him here 00 QUACK BOTANIC Gardens. Case closed. James Pond at your service.
